As the term denotes, “Kati” refers to the lumbar or lower back region, and “Basti” means r00etaining a pool of oil. Kati Basti is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy. A dam or reservoir is created using a mixture of black gram paste and wheat flour and specific herbal oil or decoction is chosen based on the individual’s dosha constitution and health condition. Next step involves applying warm medicated oil to the lower back or specific areas under treatment and allowing it to stay in the specially formed dough dam. The oil is changed on regular intervals once it cools down , warmed and then put back again .
The oil remains in the dam and allows the medicinal properties of the substance to be absorbed by the skin. After the procedure, the Ayurvedic therapist will also perform a gentle massage for better absorption of oils.
This therapeutic procedure is known for its significance in addressing various musculoskeletal and lower back conditions.
Basti is is an effective treatment for ailments like Fatty liver (Liver Basti), Thyroid (Vishudddha Basti), Pulmonary issues (Uro Basti), Heart ailments (Hriday Basti), Uterus ailments (Uttar Basti)
Liver Basti is done to detoxify the liver and treat Fatty liver conditions. It’s hepatoprotective properties and supports the health and function of the liver. Similarly, the other forms of basti address chronic conditions of the organ and the medicated oils are poured into the well created over these organs. About 14 to 21 sessions would be required for healing.
