NJAVARAKIZHI 60 minutes INR 2900
Njavarakizhi, also known as Shashtika Pinda Sweda, is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves a unique and therapeutic application of a special type of rice called “Njavara” (Oryza sativa) along with medicinal herbs. This treatment is renowned for its rejuvenating and nourishing effects on the body, promoting overall health and vitality. Njavarakizhi is often used as part of Panchakarma, the Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation process by triggering perspiration during the body scrub. What makes this treatment unique is the use of medicated herbal rice in pouches for the massage.
- To make this, rice is first soaked in milk, natural herbs and oils. The blend is cooked to a semi solid consistency, and the resulting fragrant mixture is then filled in puffy muslin pouches.
- These herbal bundles are soaked in a mixture of warm milk and a herbal decoction.
- Njavarakizhi is a two-step process: oil is first generously poured all over the body, after which the poultices/cloth pouches are used to ‘pound’ the body, with extra focus in areas where marma (nerve points) reside. Sometimes multiple therapists are often involved in the process in a synchronised manner to ensure uniformity and effectiveness.
- As the herbal bundles are applied, the therapists perform a gentle massage and simultaneously press and knead the herbal bundles against the body. This helps in the effective release of nutrients and herbal properties onto the skin. After the completion of the treatment, the individual may be advised to rest and allow the herbal substances to be absorbed by the skin.
