Abhyanga (abhyangam) is a Sanskrit word that means “oil application or oil massage.” This therapeutic massage is designed to nourish, relax and detox the body. Oils used for the Abhyanga (abhyangam) depends on the individual’s constitution and specific health conditions after the naardi parikshan/ Pulse reading.

The age old technique uses warm oil which is massaged into the skin using specific strokes and techniques. The massage is usually performed by one or more therapists and the strokes are directed towards the heart to enhance circulation and lymphatic drainage. Each session typically lasts for 60 minutes.

The benefits of Abhyangam go beyond relaxation, improved circulation, rejuvenation, and detoxification.

  • Provides strength to the body and weaker organs.
  • Beatifies body and delays ageing
  • Pacifies Vata , Pita and Kapha disorders
  • Promotes sleep, and complexion and softens the skin.
  • Promotes growth of the body and longevity.
  • Lubricates and removes dryness from the body

It may be incorporated as a part of a regular self care routine or as a part of a structured Ayurvedic abhyangam treatment plan. At Anammyaa, practitioners determine the oils and techniques based on individual needs and health conditions after the naadi-parikshan.

At Anammyaa we also offer other treatments which come under the Abhyangam category. These are:

  • Padha Abhyangam: The term ‘Padha’ refers to feet. Padha Abhyanga involves massaging the feet and lower legs with oil. It is extremely therapeutic, improving circulation and relaxation and taking care of any form of stress in the feet. It also provides relief from fatigue and promotes better sleep.
  • Shiro Abhyangam: This includes massage of the head, neck, and shoulders. It promotes relaxation, improves blood circulation, and nourishes hair. It also helps alleviate stress and promote overall well-being.
  • Ekanga Abhyangam: As the term ‘Ek Anga’ denotes, it is Abhyanga of the one part of the body or limb instead of the entire body. This is decided based on the pulse reading.
