Ayurvedic explanation for monsoon constipation

Monsoon showers bring the scent of fresh earth, cool breezes, and a welcome break from summer’s heat. Yet, for many, the rains also bring an unwelcome guest — constipation. Ayurveda explains that this seasonal slowdown in digestion is not a coincidence, but a natural result of changes in our body’s internal balance.

Why Constipation Worsens in the Rains

In Ayurveda, the rainy season is a time when Agni — the digestive fire — becomes mandya (weakened).

  • Increased humidity slows the digestive process.
  • Vata imbalance (dryness, irregularity) combines with Kapha aggravation (heaviness, sluggishness), affecting bowel movement.
  • Reduced physical activity during rainy days worsens sluggish digestion.
  • Mood changes from gloomy weather subtly affect digestion too.

Ayurvedic View on Constipation

Constipation (Vibandh) occurs when Apana Vata, the downward-moving energy, is obstructed.

  • Excess Vata dries the colon.
  • Kapha heaviness makes intestinal movement sluggish.
  • The key during monsoon is to balance Vata’s dryness and Kapha’s heaviness, keeping Agni strong.

Dos in the Monsoon for Smooth Digestion

  • Eat freshly cooked, warm, light meals.
  • Include ghee in food to lubricate the intestines.
  • Drink warm water or herbal teas like ginger, cumin, or ajwain.
  • Maintain regular meal and sleep timings.
  • Practice gentle yoga – Pawanmuktasana, Vajrasana, and Malasana aid bowel movement.
  • Use digestive spices like hing, black pepper, and jeera in meals.

Don’ts in the Monsoon

  • Avoid raw salads, sprouts, and cold foods that weaken digestive fire.
  • Don’t drink chilled water or ice-based beverages.
  • Limit excess tea/coffee – they dehydrate the colon.
  • Avoid stale, fermented, and overly oily foods.
  • Avoid bread and refined flour products that cause heaviness and sluggish digestion.
  • Skip animal proteins at night – meat, chicken, and seafood are harder to digest in the evening, especially during monsoon.
  • Don’t skip meals – irregular eating worsens Vata imbalance.
