The monsoon brings the sweet smell of rain, lush greenery, and… unfortunately, a rise in cold and cough cases. In Ayurveda, this is the season when Vata and Kapha doshas can easily get imbalanced due to fluctuating temperatures and dampness in the air. This makes our respiratory system more vulnerable, from little babies to elders.
While prevention is always better than cure, here are 3 simple home remedies you can try this season to keep colds and coughs at bay – all safe, natural, and rooted in traditional wisdom.
1. Tulsi-Ginger-Honey Kadha
Why: Tulsi (Holy Basil) strengthens immunity, ginger ignites digestive fire (Agni) and clears congestion, while honey soothes the throat.
How to make:
- Boil 5–6 fresh Tulsi leaves with ½ inch grated ginger in 1 cup water.
- Reduce to half and strain.
- Once lukewarm, add 1 tsp pure honey.
Tip: Drink once or twice a day during rains for a stronger respiratory shield.
2. Warm Mustard Oil Chest Rub
Why: Mustard oil with ajwain (carom seeds) opens nasal passages, reduces chest congestion, and keeps the body warm.
How to make:
- Heat 2 tbsp mustard oil with 1 tsp ajwain until fragrant.
- Let it cool to a comfortable warmth.
- Massage gently on chest, back, and soles of feet before bedtime.
Tip: Especially effective for children when done before sleep, followed by wearing warm cotton clothing.
3. Paan Leaf Immunity Bite
Why: Paan (betel) leaf works as a natural expectorant, helping clear mucus, while ginger juice, honey, and black pepper boost immunity and ease throat irritation.
How to make:
- Take 1 fresh, soft paan leaf.
- Add ½ tsp ginger juice, ½ tsp pure honey, and a pinch of freshly crushed black pepper.
- Fold and chew slowly, allowing the juices to coat the throat.
Tip: Have this thrice a day during cold or cough for quick relief and stronger lungs.
