If you have any of the below mentioned or any other concerns regarding your children, then you cannot miss this article!
Some of the top health concerns that come to us are:
‘How can we build our child’s immunity’
‘My child is constantly falling sick, immunity has declined’
‘We don’t want to give our children allopathy and medicines all the time’
‘Due to pollution, my child is constantly getting cough and cold’
‘My child has very low appetite and lacks focus’
First and foremost, let us understand what the immune system is and why it is so critical for us and overall well-being and good health. The immune system is essentially the body’s natural defence mechanism, designed to protect us from harmful invaders like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. It is made up of a complex network of organs, tissues, cells, and molecules that work together to detect and eliminate these harmful invaders. A good immune system keeps us healthy by recognizing anything that doesn’t belong in the body and responding accordingly.
According to Ayurveda, immunity is the body’s ability to resist disease.
The term for immunity in Ayurveda is Vyadhikshamatva, which is made up of two parts:
- Vyadhi-balavirodhitvam: The ability to withstand the severity of a disease
- Vyadhi-utpadakapratibandhakatva: The ability to prevent the occurrence and re-occurrence of a disease
Ayurveda also describes three types of immunity:
- Sehajavyadhi-kshmatva: Inherited immunity
- Vyadhijavyadhi-kshmatva: Acquired immunity
- YuktikritVyadhi-kshmatva: Acquired immunity through a healthy diet, lifestyle, and general well-being
In modern times, immunity in children and adults is limited due to many reasons. A low immune system weakens the body and becomes receptive to many diseases and infections. These impact various organs and various parts of the body and compromises the body from fighting against pollutants in the environment and infections caused by seasonal changes like flu, cold, cough and other illnesses.
A child’s immune system may become compromised or exhibit low immunity for a variety of reasons, and this can make them more vulnerable to infections and illnesses.
Below are the key factors that can contribute to a weakened immune system:
1. Genetic Conditions
Some children are born with genetic disorders that significantly impact the development or function of their immune system. One of the most well-known genetic conditions that affect immunity is Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), commonly referred to as “bubble boy disease.” In SCID, the immune system is severely compromised, leaving the child highly susceptible to infections. Other genetic conditions, also interfere with immune system function, making it harder for the body to fight off infections.
2. Medications
Certain medications can suppress or weaken the immune system, increasing the likelihood of infections. Excessive use of antibiotics and strong medicines impacts the body’s ability to fight infections and builds resistance against future infections and viruses. Also, Certain commonly used treatmentsfor cancer, destroy both cancer cells and healthy immune cells, lowering the body’s ability to defend itself. Immunosuppressive drugs used to prevent the rejection of organ transplants, such as corticosteroids or other immune-modifying medications, can also weaken the immune system by inhibiting the production of immune cells. Long-term use of these medications can put children at greater risk for both common and severe infections.
3. Infections
Acute infections can temporarily weaken the immune system in children, leaving them more vulnerable to other pathogens. For example, viral infections such as the flu, mononucleosis, and measles can cause a temporary decrease in the body’s immune response, making it more difficult to combat new infections. In some cases, certain infections can cause long-term damage to the immune system or cause it to be less effective in responding to future illnesses. Additionally, repeated infections can further deplete the immune system’s resources, leading to a cycle of continuous illness.
4. Diseases
Chronic diseases and certain medical conditions can also weaken the immune system. Diabetes, for instance, impairs the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, which can, in turn, affect the immune system’s ability to fight infections. Sickle cell anaemia, a genetic disorder affecting red blood cells, can cause frequent infections and complications that suppress the immune system. Conditions like protein-energy malnutrition and other nutritional deficiencies can impair immune function, as the body requires essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and proteins to maintain a healthy immune system. Children with untreated or poorly managed chronic diseases may experience more frequent or severe infections.
5. Lifestyle Factors
A child’s environment and lifestyle choices also play a significant role in the strength of their immune system. Poor sanitation and lack of hygiene practices can expose children to harmful bacteria and viruses that can weaken their immune systems. Malnutrition, particularly when children do not receive a balanced diet with adequate vitamins and minerals, can lead to an impaired immune response. Inadequate nutrition deprives the body of the building blocks it needs to maintain and produce immune cells. Additionally, high levels of stress can negatively affect the immune system by triggering the release of stress hormones like cortisol, which suppress immune function. A lack of regular exercise can also reduce immune system effectiveness, as physical activity helps to stimulate the production of immune cells and improve overall immune function.
6. Sleep
Sleep is vital for maintaining a strong immune system. During sleep, the body regenerates and produces critical immune cells. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep can significantly weaken the immune system, making it harder for children to fight off infections. Studies have shown that children who do not get enough sleep are more prone to colds and other illnesses. Sleep deprivation can impair the function of both the innate and adaptive immune responses, resulting in a less effective defence system.
7. Environmental Exposures
Environmental factors, such as air pollution, toxins, and exposure to chemicals, can also weaken a child’s immune system. These harmful substances can cause inflammation or damage to immune cells, reducing their ability to fight infections. Children living in areas with high levels of pollution or those who have frequent exposure to chemicals (e.g., pesticides, industrial pollutants) may experience a higher rate of respiratory infections and other immune-related disorders.
Effects of Weakened Immunity in Children
When a child has a weakened immune system, they are not only more susceptible to frequent infections but may also experience more severe illness. Infections that would normally be mild or manageable for a healthy child can lead to serious complications in children with compromised immunity. These complications can include prolonged illness, increased hospitalizations, or a greater need for medical intervention. In some cases, children with weakened immune systems may have recurring infections or develop chronic health issues as a result.
Sometimes, a child may fall ill very frequently, causing a lot of discomfort to the child and impacting the child’s day to day activities.
Conclusion
Children with a weakened immune system are at higher risk for frequent illnesses, and their ability to recover from infections may be slower or less effective. It is important for parents and caregivers to be aware of the factors that can compromise a child’s immunity and work with healthcare providers to manage and prevent complications. This may include proper nutrition, regular sleep, immunizations, and a healthy lifestyle, as well as close monitoring of any underlying medical conditions or medications that may impact immune function. Early detection and proactive care can help support the immune system and ensure better overall health for the child.
Some of the common and preventive steps one can take is to disinfect household surfaces, ensure your child drinks clean water, Practice good hand hygiene, and ensure your child takes a bath regularly. Healthy eating habits with high intake of fresh seasonal vegetables have many benefits eg. Cleanse bowls, high intake of vegetables with antioxidants and flavonoids helps boost immunity. Exercise, Sports and encouraging kids to spend time in fresh air is great way to boost your system.
As per Ayurveda, our body knows how to heal, provided it is given the right conditions.
Ayurveda prescribes Swarna Parashan as one of the best ways to boost immunity in children. Swarna Parashan is one of the ancient rituals in Ayurveda which enhances the immunity of children in the most natural way.
