When the Indian summer blazes on, there’s one comforting tradition that stands tall—cooling herbal drinks rooted in ancient wisdom. Among them, Nannari (Indian Sarsaparilla) is a prized gem, especially in South India, known not just for its unique flavour but its powerful Ayurvedic benefits.
At Anammyaa Wellness, we honour this age-old remedy—and now offer a ready-to-drink Nannari concentrate from Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, brought straight from the heart of the South.
What is Nannari?
Nannari, or Hemidesmus indicus, is a fragrant root used extensively in Ayurveda. With its sweet-earthy taste and cooling nature, it’s a perfect herbal solution for summers. Traditionally brewed into a syrup or sharbat, Nannari helps balance the body’s heat while aiding digestion and detoxification.
Why Nannari is a Must in Summer
1. Cools the Body Naturally
Helps prevent heat strokes, excessive sweating, and body fatigue due to sun exposure.
2. Aids Digestion
Consumed after meals, especially in hot weather, it soothes acidity, supports gut health, and pacifies Pitta.
3. Blood Purifier
Flushes out toxins and improves skin clarity by purifying the bloodstream.
4. Urinary Health Support
Acts as a gentle diuretic, preventing infections and supporting kidney health.
5. Energy Replenisher
Revives tired nerves and muscles with its mildly sweet, refreshing composition.
6. Balances All Three Doshas
Especially effective in calming aggravated Pitta, which tends to rise in summer.
The South Indian Tradition
In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Nannari Sharbat is more than just a drink—it’s a part of daily summer meals. Street vendors, homes, and Ayurvedic kitchens serve it chilled after spicy lunches or as a midday cooler. The root’s cooling energy helps regulate digestion and internal heat in the body’s natural rhythm.

Ashma’s Ayurvedic Note
According to Ayurveda, every season demands a change in diet and lifestyle. Nannari is a Rutu-charya (seasonal) ally for summer—cooling, calming, and deeply balancing.
Avoid combining it with dairy. Stick to water-based recipes, and enjoy it chilled for the best digestive and detox effects.
