  • Rains & The Rise of Skin Conditions in Children – An Ayurvedic Perspective

The rainy season brings joy to little ones – splashing in puddles, playing in the cool breeze, and enjoying nature’s beauty. But along with this delight, rains also bring an increase in skin issues among children – rashes, itching, fungal infections, eczema flare-ups, and urticaria (hives).

Ayurveda beautifully explains why this happens and how we can protect our children’s delicate immunity instead of suppressing symptoms with modern medicines.

Why Do Skin Conditions Rise in the Monsoon?

In Ayurveda, Varsha Ritu (rainy season) is a time when:

  • Agni (digestive fire) becomes weak due to humidity.
  • Kapha and Pitta dosha get aggravated, while dampness increases Ama (toxins) in the body.
  • Skin, being a mirror of inner health, reacts in the form of rashes, boils, itching, and infections.

Children are naturally Kapha-dominant, making them more prone to these seasonal skin eruptions.

Diet Restrictions for Children in Monsoon

To protect their skin and immunity, Ayurveda advises Ahara (dietary care) along with Dinacharya (daily routines):

Avoid:

  • Cold foods like ice creams, chilled drinks
  • Excessively oily, fried, or junk foods
  • Fermented items (bread, noodles, packaged snacks)
  • Excess milk and milk products (can increase Kapha and phlegm)
  • Overeating sweets

Include:

  • Warm, freshly cooked meals
  • Green moong dal, rice, light khichdi
  • Seasonal vegetables (bitter gourd, ridge gourd, bottle gourd – help detox)
  • Turmeric, ginger, and black pepper in small quantities
  • Warm water or cumin-coriander-fennel (CCF) water

These balance digestion and prevent toxin accumulation, which is the root cause of skin flare-ups.

Ayurvedic Treatments & Home Remedies

  • Neem & Turmeric Paste – Apply locally for rashes and itching.
  • Triphala Water Wash – Cleanses skin naturally, reduces infections.
  • Coconut Oil + Camphor – Soothes fungal patches.
  • Haridra Khanda (under Vaidya’s advice) – Strengthens immunity, balances Pitta-Kapha, prevents recurrence of rashes.
  • Daily Abhyanga (oil massage) with coconut or sesame oil – Nourishes skin and prevents dryness/eczema flare-ups.

Why Antihistamines Harm Children in the Long Run

Modern medicine often prescribes antihistamines to stop itching and rashes. While they may bring temporary relief, Ayurveda warns against such suppression:

  • They do not address root cause, only silence symptoms.
  • Continuous use makes the body dependent, lowering natural immunity.
  • They dry up channels, disturbing Vata and causing chronicity.
  • Over time, the child becomes prone to recurrent allergies, weak digestion, and skin flare-ups that never fully heal.

Ayurveda instead focuses on strengthening Agni, clearing Ama, balancing doshas, and building Ojas (immunity). This ensures children not only recover but also become resilient against seasonal changes.
